Using This Site with Teens

Recent studies suggest that young people lack a basic understanding of money management, saving, using credit, and planning for goals, including the goal of a college education. This lack of knowledge can lead teens to make costly mistakes, develop poor money-management habits that spill over into adulthood, and become targets for money scams and frauds.

This Web site has been developed to help high-school students acquire important financial knowledge in these areas, while having some fun at the same time. As a teacher, counselor, or parent, you are invited to use the site with your young teen.

Here are a few ideas:

If you are a teacher or counselor

  • Browse the Web site and choose sections to incorporate into your lesson plans.
  • Use information on the site as a starting point for discussions about money, college, goals, and more.
  • Ask teens to complete worksheets and quizzes found on the Web site and share the results in a classroom setting or during individual counseling sessions.
If you are a parent
  • Browse the Web site and choose sections that you want to discuss further with your teen.
  • Encourage your teen to complete the worksheets and quizzes; together, discuss the results.
  • Think about ways to assist your teen as he or she begins to plan for the future. In particular, see the “My Education” section of the site, which addresses concerns teens have about their families and college and includes important information about paying for college and applying for financial aid with your help.
Thank you for helping your young person grow into a financially literate adult.
